It is our right to criticize a man who chooses to enjoy pleasure that has consequences, or one who avoids pain that leads to it. On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so they shrink from toil and pain, and these cases are perfectly simple.
Does anyone undertake laborious physical exercise except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to criticize a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?
